General MAGE Configuration Instructions
Install MAGE as an external viewer/helper application for WWW
Browsers
1. Specify MIME type: chemical/x-kinemage
2. Specify file extension: kin
3. Specify application name and path location on machine:

with specific browsers are given below.
Choose the Browser that you want to configure for MAGE viewer usage.

You should have the latest
version of MAGE from http://kinemage.biochem.duke.edu
installed on your Workstation, e.g., /usr/bin/MAGE_5_7
Under Options on the Menu
Bar, Select General Preferences:
Choose Helpers from the tabular
menu
Enter the path to the global
(system) or local (your directory root) Types (mime.types or .mime.types)
file
Enter the path to the global
(system) or local (your directory root) Mailcap (mailcap or .mailcap) file
Click on OK button
Under Options on the Menu
Bar, Select Save Options
The Types file should contain
the following:
chemical/x-kinemage ............
kin
The Mailcap file should contain
the following:
#This maps KINEMAGE data
to the viewer MAGE
Where /usr/local/bin/mage_5.7
is the path to MAGE
NCSA Mosaic for UNIX
You should have the latest
version of MAGE from http://kinemage.biochem.duke.edu
installed on your Workstation, e.g., /usr/bin/MAGE_5.7
This entry must appear in
the mime.types (or .mime.types) file (either local, /home/user/.mime.types,
or systemwide, /usr/local/mosaic/mime.types)

installed on your desktop
Under Options on the Menu
Bar, Select Preferences:
Choose Helper Applications
from the drag menu
Click on the New button
Input chemical as the Mime
type
Input x-kinemage as the Mime
subtype
Click on OK button
Input kin as the Extension
Use the Browse button to
find and select the MAGE_5.7 viewer location on your hard drive
Input the File type as Mage(icon)
TEXT
Launch Application Action
is automatically selected
Click on OK button
Rebuild the desktop to institute
changes. Hold down modifier keys, option and command, while restarting the
desktop. Continue holding down keys until a message appears, "Are you sure
you want to rebuild the desktop?". Answer yes. You may now release the keys.
NCSA Mosaic for Macintosh
You should have the latest
version of MAGE from http://kinemage.biochem.duke.edu
installed on your desktop
Under Options on the Menu
Bar, Select Preferences:
Click on the Apps Icon, a
Helper Applications button now appears
Click on the Helper Applications
button
Click on the Add Document
Type button
Input chemical/x-kinemage
as the Document Type
Select the Add Extension
button
Input kin as the Extension
Change the Application to
be launched by highlighting chemical/x-kinemage - -> TeachText in the DocumentType
- ->Application window, a Set Applications button now appears
Click on the Set Applications
button and select the MAGE_5.7 viewer location on your hard drive
The DocumentType - ->Application
should now look like:
chemical/x-kinemage - ->MAGE_5.7
The Extension - ->DocumentType
should now look like:
Kin - ->chemical/x-kinemage
Click on OK button
Click on Apply button to save
the Helper Application addition
Restart Mosaic to institute
changes.
MS-Windows Browsers for PCs
Netscape Communication Navigator for Windows
You should have the latest
version of MAGE from http://kinemage.biochem.duke.edu
installed on your PC, e.g., c:\kinemage\MAGE_5_7.EXE
Under Options on the Menu
Bar, Select Preferences:
Select Helper Applications
from the Preferences menu
Click on the New button
Input chemical as the Mime
type
Input x-kinemage as the Mime
subtype
Click on OK button
Input kin as the Extension
Use the Browse button to

Click on the Add button

in the "Associate Mime Type of:" block
Input .kin in the "With this/these
extensions:" block
Use the Browse button to
find and select the path to the MAGE_5_7 viewer, e.g., c:\kinemage/MAGE_5_7.EXE
for the "To this application:" block
Click on OK button
