The 22nd Annual Symposium of The Protein Society will be held July 19-23, 2008 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego in San Diego, California. It will feature an outstanding scientific program that is being organized by the co-chairs, Douglas Barrick (The Johns Hopkins University) and Leemor Joshua-Tor (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory). The meeting theme is Proteins: Machines of Life. The scientific program will include more than 50 invited speakers and 16 scientific sessions. The 2008 Society Awards will be presented in Awards Plenary Sessions, and awardees will present plenary lectures.

The symposium will feature sessions on recent structural advances in nucleic acid and protein motors. The symposium also will feature sessions on intrinsically disordered proteins, amyloid formation in vitro and in vivo, protein folding and design, systems biology and proteomics, signal transduction systems from a drug discovery perspective, membrane proteases, allostery and recognition.

The symposium offers young investigators excellent opportunities for their submitted abstracts to be selected for recognition and presentation, which can facilitate career and networking prospects. Ten abstracts from graduate and undergraduate students will be selected for Poster Awards, and four undergraduate abstracts will be selected for oral presentations in the Undergraduate Research Session. Sixteen abstracts submitted by young investigators will be selected for oral presentations during scientific sessions. Abstracts will be published in a supplement to Protein Science.

The 22nd Annual Symposium will again feature The Protein Society Graduate Program Fair. This popular event caters to students who are interested in pursuing training and careers in protein science. Students will have the opportunity to interact with representatives from institutions with graduate programs that register to participate in the fair.
