Mission/Origin The Protein Society is the leading international society devoted to furthering research and development in protein science. The purpose of the Society is to provide national and international forums to facilitate communication, cooperation and collaboration with respect to all aspects of the study of proteins. The Protein Society is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization that was founded in 1986 to consolidate the knowledge and experience of a global community of protein scientists and to explore all aspects of the building blocks of life: protein molecules. The Protein Society is a member of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), a coalition of 21 independent societies that plays an active role in lobbying for the interests of biomedical scientists.
Membership The Protein Society members represent: universities, foundations, institutes and corporations to provide leadership in this broad field of research. The Society and its members are making a strong impact on the advancements of protein science. The Protein Society membership is open to scholars and researchers interested in the analysis, chemistry, folding, structure, function, and regulation of proteins. Members have an opportunity to actively participate in the emerging fields of protein science including proteomics, bioinformatics, structural biology, and computational biology as they pertain to proteins at the molecular and cellular level. Publications Protein Science, the monthly academic publication of The Protein Society, is dedicated to research on all scientific aspects of protein molecules. As the premier journal in the field, Protein Science publishes full-length original research, peer reviews, and book reviews from leading scientists and scholars throughout the field of protein science. Several significant advancements relating to the chemical, biophysical, and recombinant determination of protein structure have been reported in Protein Science. Protein Science is available in both print and online editions. The online edition, which allows for online submission and review, is included with a membership in The Protein Society. Visit the journal website at http://www.proteinscience.org to view the latest published research.
The Protein Society News is the Society newsletter that is published twice a year to keep members informed about the Society’s activities including symposia, awards and committees as well as news of special interests to the protein science community.
Annual Symposia Each year, the Society holds an Annual Symposium, which brings together over 1,000 research scientists in the multidisciplinary fields representing protein science. Biannually, the Society convenes a European Symposium, which brings together over 600 research scientists. The symposia feature award plenary sessions, poster sessions, state-of-the-art exhibits, committee programs, and social activities.
Awards Seven prestigious awards are presented at The Protein Society Symposia:
The Carl Brändén Award NEW in 2007 The Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin Award NEW in 2007 The Stein and Moore Award The Hans Neurath Award The Emil Thomas Kaiser Award The Christian B. Anfinsen Award Learn more about about these awards, including nomination deadlines and past recipients>
Public Affairs The Protein Society helps keep its members current on relevant legislation and science policy issues. Through its membership in FASEB, the Society has participated in advocating for funding support of NIH and NSF, and other relevant agencies. As a member of the Bridging the Sciences Coalition, the Society advocates for increased funding at the interface between the life sciences and physical sciences.
