The 22nd Annual Symposium of The Protein Society will be held July 19-23, 2008 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego in San Diego, California. It will feature an outstanding scientific program that is being organized by the co-chairs, Douglas Barrick (The Johns Hopkins University) and Leemor Joshua-Tor (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory).  The academic liaison is José Onuchic (University of California, San Diego).

The meeting theme is Proteins: Machines of Life. The scientific program will include more than 50 invited speakers and 14 scientific sessions. Two Plenary Sessions will be featured on the topics of “Nucleic Acid Motors” and “Protein Motors.” Jane Richardson (Duke University) will be the featured speaker at the Awards Banquet of the 22nd Annual Symposium of The Protein Society.  The 2008 Society Awards will be presented in Awards Plenary Sessions, and awardees will present plenary lectures. Sessions will address molecular mechanisms of protein folding, design, and dynamics from simple globular proteins to molecular machines, focusing in part on recent structural advances in nucleic acid and protein motors. The symposium will also feature sessions on complex multiprotein systems, including advances in structure determination, proteomics, and systems biology.

The Symposium will open with two morning and two afternoon concurrent symposia. The first

of two Awards Plenary Sessions will take place from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, with the Opening Reception immediately following. Join us at the Opening Reception to network and socialize with your colleagues. Jane Richardson (Duke University) is the featured Awards Banquet speaker on Tuesday evening. The Symposium will conclude on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Noon. All events will take place at The Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego.

The symposium offers young investigators excellent opportunities for their submitted abstracts to be selected for recognition and presentation, which can facilitate career and networking prospects. Ten abstracts from graduate and undergraduate students will be selected for Poster Awards, and four undergraduate abstracts will be selected for oral presentations in the Undergraduate Research Session. Sixteen abstracts submitted by young investigators will be selected for oral presentations during scientific sessions. Abstracts will be published in a supplement to Protein Science.

A NEW workshop is introduced this year!  The workshop, entitled "Behind the NIH Study Section Door: A Mock Review Panel," provides an introduction into the review process of an NIH research grant application. Experienced investigators as well as representatives from NIH will present a mock review panel providing participants a real glimpse at the internal review process. This session will also feature a preview of FY2009 NIH funding and future outlook, highlighting the importance of becoming involved in national science policy issues and specific ways to increase their influence.

The 22nd Annual Symposium will again feature The Protein Society Graduate Program Fair. This popular event caters to students who are interested in pursuing training and careers in protein science. Students will have the opportunity to interact with representatives from institutions with graduate programs that register to participate in the fair.
