23rdSymposium Final Addendum

The 23rd Annual Symposium of The Protein Society
PROTEINS IN MOTION

July 25-29, 2009
Boston, Massachusetts
Boston Marriott Copley Place

The 23rd Annual Symposium of The Protein Society will feature an outstanding program that is being organized by the co-chairs, Celia Schiffer (University of Massachusetts Medical School) and David Eliezer (Weill Medical College of Cornell University). The meeting theme is Proteins in Motion. All events will take place at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.

Two Plenary Sessions will be featured on the topics of “Dynamics and Thermodynamics” and “Allostery.” The 2009 Society Awards will be presented in two Awards Plenary Sessions, and awardees will present plenary lectures. Scientific sessions will address folding, design, trafficking, membrane remodeling, therapeutics and targets, dynamics of protein nucleic acid interactions, disorder, drug resistance, cytoskeleton dynamics, dynamic complexes and networks, signaling, and translocation and transport.

The Symposium will open on Saturday, July 25 with two morning and two afternoon concurrent symposia. The first of two Awards Plenary Sessions will take place on Saturday evening, with the Opening Reception immediately following. Join us at the Opening Reception to network and socialize with your colleagues. The Awards Banquet will take place on Tuesday evening following the second Awards Plenary Session. The Symposium will conclude on Wednesday, July 29 at 12 Noon.

The Symposium offers young investigators excellent opportunities for their submitted abstracts to be selected for recognition and presentation, which can facilitate career and networking prospects. Ten abstracts from graduate and undergraduate students will be selected for Poster Awards, and four undergraduate abstracts will be selected for oral presentations in the Undergraduate Research Session. Sixteen abstracts submitted by young investigators will be selected for oral presentations during scientific sessions. Abstracts will be published in a supplement to Protein Science.

The 23rd Annual Symposium will again feature The Protein Society Graduate Program Fair. This popular event caters to students who are interested in pursuing training and careers in protein science. Students will have the opportunity to interact with representatives from institutions with graduate programs that register to participate in the fair. New features being introduced this year include a Munch & Mingle Reception, Breakout Sessions, and a Student/Postdoc Lounge.

We hope you will join us for an exceptional scientific symposium in Boston.

NEW! Writing Workshop

Those participants submitting abstracts may register to attend a workshop to review the fundamentals of how to plan, organize and write a good paper. You may select the option to register for this workshop when you submit an abstract by the deadline of Wednesday, March 18, 2009. Workshop registrants may also request to have their abstracts selected for a writing evaluation by the panel leading this workshop.

NEW! Student/Postdoc Lounge

Undergraduate and graduate students and postdocs will have the space and resources to network with each other and with mentor and career associates or to just regroup and relax.

Behind the NIH Study Section Door: NIH Mock Review Panel. This workshop provides an introduction into the review process of an

NIH research grant application. Experienced investigators as well as representatives from NIH will present a mock review panel, providing a real glimpse at the internal review process.

Career Panel

In this session, young protein scientists can shape their careers and therefore the future workforce. The panel helps young scientists make decisions on pathways that may lead to industrial or academic careers. Sponsor representatives may participate in the panel.

Undergraduate Student Research Session

In this session, undergraduate students and faculty will present their work to gain visibility and make connections for graduate school and for professional positions.

Undergraduate Student and Mentor/Career Mentoring Mixer

A primary opportunity for young protein scientists (students, postdocs and young faculty) to become acquainted with each other and with career-building individuals. Mixer sponsors are also seeking to engage participants in Committee activities.

Educator’s Luncheon/Workshop

The Educator’s Luncheon is a topic-oriented workshop aimed at assisting faculty in keeping their courses current with rapid developments in protein science. The topic this year is “Interactive, Collaborative, Quantitative Biochemistry Education in the 2.0 Era” featuring presenters from the BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium.

CV/Resume Writing Workshop

Does your resume best reflect your skills and accomplishments? Hiring experts in academia and industry offer practical advice on how to develop an effective resume and hone your job hunting and interviewing skills to ensure that you are marketing your skills to the best of your ability.

Networking Dinners

Postdocs and students can network with distinguished Symposium colleagues—Speakers, Councilors, Award Winners—at selected area

restaurants. Several small dinner groups will be arranged to include about 10 participants each.
