The 24th Annual Symposium of The Protein Society will start on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, California. The program planning committee, chaired by David Goldenberg, has organized an exceptional scientific program, which includes more than 50 invited speakers and 14 scientific sessions. The meeting theme is" Looking at Proteins: Expanding Perspectives and New Technologies". All symposia sessions, exhibits, and workshops will be held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Two Plenary Sessions will feature “Macromolecular Machines” and a memorial session honoring Frederic Richards (one of the leading researchers in the fields of protein structure and chemistry as well as a founding member of The Protein Society Executive Council). The 2010 Society Awards will be presented in two Awards Plenary Sessions, and awardees will present plenary lectures. A special scientific session on Protein Stability and Drug Formulation is being organized by John Carpenter (University of Colorado, Denver) and Ted Randolph (University of Colorado, Boulder). Other scientific sessions will focus on Protein Engineering for Solubility and Reconstitution, Imaging and Deconstructing Large Complexes, Visualizing Proteins in Cells, Protein Therapeutics and Diagnostics, Disordered Proteins, Protein Folding, Membrane Proteins and Receptors, Microfluidics and Microarrays, Metalloproteins, Protein Design and Evolution, and Amyloids and Disease.

The Symposium will offer young investigators excellent opportunities for their submitted abstracts to be selected for recognition and presentation as oral or poster presentation, which can facilitate career and networking prospects. Ten abstracts from graduate and undergraduate students will be selected for Poster Awards. In addition, five undergraduate abstracts will be selected for oral presentations in the Undergraduate Research Session. Sixteen abstracts submitted by young investigators will be selected for oral presentations during scientific sessions. All abstracts will be published in a supplement to Protein Science, The Society’s peer reviewed monthly journal.

The 24th Annual Symposium will again feature The Protein Society Graduate Program Fair. This popular event caters to students who are interested in pursuing training and careers in protein science. Students will have the opportunity to interact with representatives from institutions with graduate programs that register to participate in the fair.

We hope you will join us for an exceptional scientific symposium in San Diego.

SYMPOSIUM FEATURES

Behind the NIH Study Section Door: A Mock Review Panel

This workshop will provide an introduction into the review process of an NIH research grant application. Experienced investigators as well as representatives from NIH will present a mock review panel – providing an accurate glimpse at the internal review process.

Career Panel

In this session, young protein scientists can shape their careers and the future workforce. The panel will help young scientists make decisions on pathways that may lead to industrial or academic careers. Sponsor representatives may participate in the panel discussions.

Commercial Exhibits

Commercial exhibits will open on Monday, August 2 and end late afternoon on Wednesday, August 4, 2010. Symposium participants will be able to interact with industry representatives and examine state-of-the-art products and services. There will be two munch and mingle receptions in the Exhibit Hall to provide further social and

networking opportunities.

Commercial Tutorials

There will be a number of morning and mid-day commercial tutorial sessions offered on a variety of topics.

CV/Resume Writing Luncheon/Workshop

Does your resume best reflect your skills and accomplishments? Hiring experts in academia and industry will offer practical advice on how to develop an effective resume and hone your job hunting and interviewing skills. These workshops are designed to ensure that you are marketing your skills to the best of your ability.

Education and Mentoring Committee Meeting & Mixer

The meetings and mixer are primary opportunities for young protein scientists (students, postdocs and young faculty) to become acquainted with each other. It’s a chance to interact with career building individuals. Mixer sponsors are also seeking to engage participants in committee activities.

Educator’s Luncheon/Workshop

The Educator’s luncheon is a topic-oriented workshop aimed at assisting faculty in keeping their courses current in light of rapid developments in protein science.

Fundamentals of Good Scientific Writing

Participants submitting abstracts will be able to register to attend a workshop that reviews the fundamentals of how to plan organize and write a good paper. The deadline to register for the Writing Workshop is Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Workshop registrants will also be able to have their abstracts writing critiqued by the workshop panel.

New!   How to Find a Postdoc Position

Are your e-mails inquiring about postdoc positions going unanswered? In this workshop, we will provide some "tricks of the trade" to best present your application for a postdoctoral position in a top laboratory.

New!   How to Give a Great Talk

Ever sat through a boring talk and vowed never to give one?  In this workshop, we will provide clear guidelines on the do-s and dont-s of giving a great talk.

Networking Dinners

Postdocs, graduate students and undergrads will have the opportunity to network with distinguished Symposium colleagues including speakers, Society Council members, and award winners at selected area restaurants. Several small dinner groups will be arranged to include approximately 10 participants.
