Interview requirements for obtaining a visa may now be more stringent than in years past, and visas may take longer to approve. All international attendees who will need to obtain a visa to enter the United States are urged to contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate and begin the application process as soon as possible but no later than 3 to 4 months before the meeting. Because of the number of visas being processed and the need to be thorough with the reviews, the process can take as long as 8 weeks, especially for those residing in countries that are on the US State Sponsors of Terrorism List. Attendees from these countries should start the application process at least 6 months in advance of the meeting.

Boston's public transportation system is operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, but locals know it simply as the "T". It offers subway, bus, trolley car and boat service to just about everywhere in the Greater Boston area and beyond. To ride the T, you need to purchase a CharlieCard or CharlieTicket. These can be purchased at every subway station at vending machines and at select convenience stores. The basic fare is $2.90 with a CharlieTicket or $2.40 if you have a Charlie Card. Several updates for all transportation options and stations can be located on the MBTA's service alert page.

Why book using the TPS link?

As a meeting attendee, it is important for you to book your hotel room in the TPS housing block to guarantee the best accommodations and most competitive nightly rates, especially in the event of overbooking or construction.

Filling a room block is important to the Society because it provides a "report card" on the Society's meeting sites.  By establishing a history of always filling the room block, the Society is able to secure both competitive room rates and larger blocks in subsequent years.

Hotel Changes and Cancellation Policy

For attendees, cancellations or changes must be made with the hotel directly. A cancellation penalty fee may be assessed. Penalties for early departures are enforced and vary by hotel. Rooms are subject to availability.

All hotel rates are based upon room occupancy and are per room/per night charges, not per person. All rates are subject to state, local, and occupancy taxes.

VISA Waiver Information

International attendees who are nationals of countries listed in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) may be able to travel to the United States for 90 days or less without obtaining a visa.

Please note: All VWP travelers from the 27 eligible countries, regardless of age or type of passport used, must present individual machine-readable passports to enter the United States.

VISA Problems

If the status of your visa applications is pending for more than 60 days, please report your case to The National Academy of Sciences (NAS). You will be asked to complete an online questionnaire. To help the NAS identify you as a participant of this meeting, please include the name of the conference in the "Purpose of Visit" field on the questionnaire

Invitation Letter Requests
